An illustration with simple physics and rounded assumptions: your thermostat setting, the weather outside and the type of equipment decide how long the system runs, how steady the temperature is and what it costs. Real homes vary.
Five things that decide how a house feels.
Outside weather sets the load
The bigger the gap between inside and outside, the harder the system works.
Standard equipment cycles on and off
Big swings and short cycles are why a house can feel cool and clammy.
Two-stage runs gentler
Longer, quieter cycles keep temperatures steadier and remove more moisture.
Variable-speed adjusts to the need
It holds the thermostat setting within a fraction of a degree with less power.
Sizing and ducts matter most
Even the best equipment struggles when it is the wrong size or the air leaks away.

What size system does my home need?
It depends on the home's size, insulation, windows, sun exposure and ducts, not just square footage. A rough rule is about one ton of cooling per 500 to 600 square feet, and our System Sizer gives a first estimate. A load calculation confirms it.
What is a heat pump, and does it work in Tennessee winters?
A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, so it heats and cools very efficiently. Modern models heat well in Middle Tennessee winters, and a backup heat source or a gas furnace in a dual-fuel setup covers the coldest days.
Why is one room hotter or colder than the rest?
Common causes are undersized or leaky ducts, missing returns, sun exposure, thin insulation and a system that is too large or small. A measurement visit finds the cause, and fixes range from balancing to zoning or a ductless head.
