Why size matters

Seven things that change the answer.

Square footage

More space needs more capacity, but not in a straight line.

Insulation

Thin attic and wall insulation can add a large share to the load.

Windows and sun

West-facing glass is one of the biggest summer heat sources.

Ceiling height

Taller rooms hold more air to condition.

Air leakage

Drafty houses lose conditioned air all day.

Ducts

Leaky or undersized ducts can waste a large share of capacity.

People and equipment

Each person and appliance adds heat.

Sizing questions

What size system does my home need?

It depends on the home's size, insulation, windows, sun exposure and ducts, not just square footage. A rough rule is about one ton of cooling per 500 to 600 square feet, and our System Sizer gives a first estimate. A load calculation confirms it.

How much does a new air conditioner or furnace cost?

Commonly published installed prices run roughly $5,000 to $12,000 for a central air conditioner, $3,800 to $10,000 for a furnace and $5,000 to $13,000 for a heat pump, depending on size, efficiency and the work needed. Our Savings Calculator and System Sizer give a first view, and a free estimate gives you a written price.

Why is one room hotter or colder than the rest?

Common causes are undersized or leaky ducts, missing returns, sun exposure, thin insulation and a system that is too large or small. A measurement visit finds the cause, and fixes range from balancing to zoning or a ductless head.
